Why BJJ is better than going to the gym

We’re a couple of days into the new year now, so that means the gyms around the country are getting busy again!

For most people, those New Year Resolutions don’t last long, but unfortunately their gym memberships do. The 12 month contract you signed up to is almost impossible to get out of, and who knew Direct Debts were so hard to cancel?!

Paying for a gym membership you never use is just one reason why you shouldn’t bother signing up, but instead take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instead.

People join gyms for different reasons. Some want to build muscle, while others want to lose weight. Some people simply want to get fit, and others join just to get out of the house.

BJJ is better for all those things than a typical gym membership.

It’s a better all-round workout

Trust us, the first time you roll on the mats, you WILL feel it the next day. That’s because BJJ is a total and complete workout.

If you want to lose weight, then BJJ is for you.

If you want to improve your cardio, BJJ is for you.

If you want to gain strength BJJ is for you.

If you want to tone and sculpt BJJ is for you.

The problem with a gym workout is, each muscle group tends to be worked on individually, usually days, sometimes even weeks apart.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works every muscle in your body and gets the heart going while you’re at it.

One month of BJJ is worth a year at the gym.

You socialise more

There’s a myth about gyms being social hubs filled with laughing, chatty people.

They’re not.

People are there to work out, and they’ve got a list of exercises to do in a short space of time. They don’t have time to stand and chat to strangers.

And even if they did have time, they probably don’t want to.

First impressions count and meeting someone while you’re all sweaty and dressed like a hobo isn’t exactly appealing.

Martial Arts in general are group activities, and training with people who are of the same mindset as you form close bonds which are hard to find outside a dojo.

Taking up BJJ means you’ll make some of the best friends you’ll ever have, something you’ll never find at your typical gym.

Learn practical skills

Martial arts exist for a reason.

The world can be a dangerous place, and knowing how to look after yourself is something that everyone should be taught from an early age.

By taking up BJJ instead of joining a gym, you’ll not only get in shape, but you’ll learn invaluable practical lessons which you can carry over into your real life.

Being fit is one thing, but being physically competent is another.

The ability to defend not only yourself but those around you is an essential skill which breed confidence, and it’s something that you can’t learn by yourself.

And certainly not on a treadmill.

bjj bored at the gym

You’ll never get bored

All those people who join a gym in January and then stop going by Easter aren’t lazy. If they were, they wouldn’t have joined in the first place.

They’re bored.

Our brains are incredible at adapting, and we get used to things very quickly. That includes a workout.

It’s not long before doing the same thing at the gym week in, week out, will get boring. Soon going to the gym feels like a chore rather than something you want to do, and shortly after that you stop going.

It’s not your fault, your brain has simply adapted and now needs a new challenge.

This doesn’t happen with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Every week there is something new to learn, a new move to try, or even a new member to meet.

BJJ is a constant challenge, and one which we guarantee your brain will never get bored of.

Skip the gym, join us instead!

Here’s the thing with taking up BJJ – getting in shape is an inevitable side effect.

It happens in the background as you work on your techniques.

Your body is quietly changing as you go to class week to week.

Your strength increases from all the pushing and pulling on the mats.

You don’t even know it’s happening until one day you notice in the mirror you’ve got a 6 pack.

With a gym membership, you get out what you put in. It’s a process that must be adhered to, and if you slack off or miss a few weeks then you’re practically back to square one.

It’s a lonely hour, filled with awkward small chat about using machines while counting reps and sets.

Compare that to an hour at our club where you’re constantly chatting with friends, learning new moves, and boosting your confidence with every visit.

It’s a simple choice.
