Gracie Barra Belfast welcomes back one of the sport’s greats – Braulio Estima

It’s that time of year again!

We are over the moon to welcome back one of the true legends of BJJ, a champion numerous times over, and an innovator of the sport.

Now a 4th degree black belt, Braulio “Carcará” Estima was awarded his Black Belt by Carlos Gracie Jr over 15 years ago.

Since first donning a Gi he has competed – and won – tournaments across the globe, setting records and lifting trophies.

Braulio will be joining us again here in Belfast to share some of his extensive experience, so don’t miss out!

Braulio Estima

Early life and career

Born in Recife, Northern Brazil, Braulio first started judo at age 9, but stopped a year later after his coach was tragically killed in a motorbike accident.

He didn’t take up a martial art again until the age of 16 when he discovered Jiu-Jitsu through a friend.

Under the instruction of Charles dos Anjos, Braulio was soon awarded his blue belt after winning 5 major junior titles in a row.

Purple followed 3 years later, and after winning bronze at the Pan-American Championship in 2000, he was promoted to brown belt.

Anarchy in the UK

Alain Pozo, an old training partner of Braulio’s, was living in London and invited Braulio to come over to the UK. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was booming in Europe around this time, and Braulio didn’t hesitate.

In London, Braulio trained for a short while at Carlson Gracie’s team in the famous “Boiler Room” academy, and soon after was invited to Birmingham by the legendary Maurição Gomes to teach at the first Gracie Barra Academy in the UK.

Maurição’s son Roger Gracie (you may have heard of him!) was Braulio’s training partner, and together grew to the point where they became two of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners on the planet.

Braulio has taught several respected UK grapplers including our very own Graham Keys.

Braulio Estima

Championships and records

We’re not going to list the fights Braulio Estima has won because there’s simply too many. Instead here’s a quick summary of his achievements:

  • IBJJF 3x World Champion
  • UAEJJF World Pro Champion
  • ADCC 3x Champion
  • IBJJF Multiple time European Champion and Record Holder
  • IBJJF Pan American Champion

Braulio currently holds the most wins at the European Championship, with a total number of 5, and made history when he submitted seven people in a ridiculous 5 minutes and 24 seconds at the 2003 Pan-American Championship.

Needless to say, he’s better at BJJ than you, so you’ll probably want to hear what he has to say at our upcoming seminar.
