Why your kids should learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

There’s an unfair assumption amongst many over-protective parents that learning a martial art is all about violence.

In fact, the opposite is true; the more knowledge and experience someone has in martial arts, the less likely they are to get into a fight.

Kids who learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at a young age are set on a different path in life, one filled with self-confidence, respect, and a desire to stay in shape.

Kids BJJ

Confidence early in life

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great way to boost your kids’ confidence.

At its most basic level, BJJ teaches kids how to look after themselves, giving them poise against anyone who tries to bully them.

If kids (or anyone for that matter) know how to defend themselves, then that brings a natural empowerment that seeps into every other aspect of their life. Or simply put, self-defense leads to self-confidence.

They tend to do better in other sports, are calmer in unknown or stressful situations, and stand up for others.

But Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also teaches kids that failure is a part of life, and the only way to overcome it is to keep getting back on the horse (or mats in this case!).

Instead of giving up when things get tough, BJJ teaches kids that losing isn’t the end of the road, but simply a lesson to use for the next time.

Social skills

Having kids interact with one another from an early age is essential for a developing mind.

Social interaction is important throughout our lives, but especially beneficial for child development.

The right environment can help children develop strong language skills, creativity, empathy, communication and confidence.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are wonderfully social occasions, during which children develop great friendships and learn to trust and cooperate with their training partners.

Even adults who attend BJJ classes often make close friends, which they thought was impossible later in life.

Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Regular exercise

Let’s face it, children today have problems with their health unlike any generation before.

And it seems to be getting worse, with a quarter of a billion children expected to be obese in the next 10 years.

Kids need regular exercise, and BJJ is perfect for that.

Not only does it promote a healthy lifestyle, but it gives kids something real to focus on and enjoy in a world that’s dominated by smartphones and Netflix.

When kids learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, they undergo a steady progression each week, and it’s something they can look forward to.

They can also see how their skills are developing, giving them a sense of accomplishment and pride in their hard work.

Help your kid to achieve their full potential

We want the very best for our kids, but hiding them from the world isn’t going to help them.

By teaching them Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from an early age, they can learn to defend themselves, make friends easier, respect others, and have a healthy attitude towards exercise.

BJJ is challenging, both mentally and physically, but that’s why it’s worth the effort.

This popular martial art will strengthen your kids, both inside and out, helping them grow into responsible and productive adults.

It will teach them how to thrive outside of their comfort zone, giving them the tools to better handle the challenges life will throw at them.

Here at Gracie Barra Belfast, we have special BJJ classes just for kids.

Our Future Champions Programme  was created to provide children aged 6-15 with an environment that allows them to experience and understand core values like focus, discipline, persistence, self-confidence, cooperation and respect.
